Santa Lucia Preserve

This week I am featuring a Home/Compound in the Santa Lucia Preserve designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Architecture. They have received over 625 regional, national and international awards for design. This job is no exception, it won the 2016 'Tucker Design Award for Excellence in the use of Natural Stone'.

Deciding on which stone to use for this job was no easy task. I was brought in by David Stocker (Stocker and Allaire GC) because his client was extremely focused on the Stone work aspect of the project. I meet the owner on-site and we got along great right from the start ( because I am extremely focused on Stone work as well, lol). I drove him around some jobs we've done, went thru some pictures I had and started in on samples when we finally realized...The 'Look' he hand in mind was was from the stone work at Cornell University. He had graduated from there years ago with a degree in Architecture.

Now that we knew the look to achieve Robin Stuedler from the Granite Rock company was able to source a quarry in Ithaca N.Y. called Finger Lake Stone. I worked with the owner, Jim McKinna, to spec the different types of stone I needed. Wall rock, large landscape boulders, cap stone, stone lintels, corbels, fireplace hearths and more were chosen and shipped. A couple hundred tons were sent over a 3 years period of time.

This job has been built in phases. We have completed the Pool house and the Guesthouse/garage. The Main house is next. Hey, we're ready whenever they are!! -JD
