The Highlands

Today I'm featuring a project we just recently completed. It's a 7,500 sqft stone and glass house on a cliff overlooking the ocean. This home is right on trend with a very creative design by one of Monterey's Top architects (and my long time friend) David Martin. We worked together to come up with a stone and 'style of lay' that would complement the lines of the house and fit with thier budget. After weeks of samples and 'mock-ups' Robyn Steudler from Granite Rock sourced a split-faced limestone from Kansas called St Pauls. The owners loved it! We combined this with Mill Creek (thermal top, distressed edges) flat stone for the patios and stairs. I worked closely with Bernard Trainor (landscape architect) to achieve his vision for the very interesting and unique stairway to the ocean. These types of homes can be tricky to build. Lots of moving parts. We were lucky to be hired by Bill McLeod (General Contractor) for this job. I started doing Bills stone work in the mid 90's just after he finished building Post Ranch. Bill seems to always come up with the coolest homes on the Coast. Hope you like this one! -JD
